Powell River Brain Injury Society

Who We Are

The Mission of Powell River Brain Injury Society is to promote prevention, recovery, education, community awareness and life beyond acquired brain injury.

We operate a drop-in center dedicated to supporting individuals affected by acquired brain injury (ABI). Our range of programs and projects is designed for individuals with ABI, as well as their family members, caregivers, and friends.

We also maintain a comprehensive resource library that offers both general and specialized information. This library is open to the public, healthcare professionals, and anyone seeking to learn more about acquired brain injury. Materials can be borrowed and returned as needed.

Our services include injury-related counseling and referrals to healthcare professionals, legal advisors, and other services that can support our members on their journey to living fulfilling lives after brain injury.

We follow the WIT (Whatever It Takes) model of client-centered therapy. This approach means we are dedicated to helping however we can, and if we don’t have the answers, we are committed to learning and finding solutions.

Our diverse programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Cognitive Enhancement,
  • Psychosocial Support,
  • Creative Expression (Art Therapy),
  • Music Therapy,
  • Mental Fitness through Physical Fitness,
  • Counseling and Support,
  • Social Programs and Community Integration,
  • All our programs focus on the mental health and well-being of our clients, their families, caregivers, and friends.

Acquired brain injury often leads to isolation and challenges with adjusting to a new way of life.

Many clients are unable to return to their previous employment due to symptoms such as memory loss (both short and long term), difficulties with learning and retaining new skills, anger management issues, social isolation, and perseveration (obsessive thinking about the past).

We are here to help them navigate these challenges and improve their quality of life.

Why We Are Involved

As an organization focused on supporting individuals with brain injuries, Powell River Brain Injury Society is already committed to providing resources and assistance that empower those living with disabilities. Being part of the Community of Accessible Employers formalizes our efforts in ensuring people with brain injuries have equal opportunities to work and thrive, and raises awareness about brain injuries and the challenges that individuals with such injuries face.
