Who We Are

The BC Libraries Coop helps libraries help people. BCLC is a community service cooperative with over 200 institutional members across Canada. Founded in 2009, the Co-Op runs projects on open source technology, accessible publishing for the print-disabled and advocates on behalf of libraries.

Why We Are Involved

We work on accessible publishing for people with print disabilities in Canada. Up to 10% of people in Canada have a print disability. We know that access to information should be a right, not a privilege, and are committed to advancing accessibility within our organization, and our sectors.

Distinction and Awards

• Certificate of Excellence from the Canadian Federation of the Blind – Awarded for the co-development of the National Network of Equitable Library Service.
• 2019 Library Journal Movers and Shakers award for Innovators, for work with NNELS.
• Shortlisted for the 2019 Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing.

Accessibility Initiatives

The National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS). This project works with governments and publishers to enhance access for people with print disabilities to books published in Canada and makes copies of books in accessible formats for people with print disabilities.
